Duties Description A Forestry Technician 1 will conduct a variety of tasks related to the collection, handling and storage of tree and shrub seed in support of operations at the Colonel William F. Fox Memorial Saratoga Tree Nursery.

Duties May Include:

•Collecting and harvesting seeds, cones and fruit of trees and shrubs used in the propagation of forest nursery stock.
•Perform routine maintenance of seed orchards and seed production areas using forestry hand tools, gas and battery powered saws and various agricultural machinery such as tractors and front-end loaders.
•Clean, process and properly handle and store forest nursery seeds while utilizing appropriate protocols and guidelines established by program management.
•Conduct seed purity, moisture and germination testing in a laboratory setting.
•Maintain records, databases and other systems to track and record seed sourcing and other storage data.
•Utilize a Geographic Information System to identify and map seed collection sites, seed orchard locations and future planting sites.
•Conduct other forest nursery duties as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry, which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: botany, dendrology, forest biology, forest ecology, forest ecosystem management, forest entomology, forest health, forest mensuration, forest pathology, forest protection, forest soils, general soils, geographic information systems, land surveying, and silviculture

OR

One (1) year of technical forestry experience in one (1) or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests.

Additional Comments This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2026, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
